Should you buy your hookup a Christmas gift?

by The HUD App Team

You've been seeing each other casually for a while, but you're not in a relationship. You're not even really friends. But it's the holidays, so... What's the protocol around giving your hookup a gift?

You give your hairstylist a bottle of bubbles and some cash, but the person you're hooking up with sees far more of you (take that in whatever way you wish). You even leave your mail carrier a Christmas tip. What about your hookup?

Christmas gifts can mean different things to different people - in the case of your hairstylist or mail carrier, it's about appreciation for the job they do, and they're not likely to read into the gift too much. But with a casual date, there's always the potential for things to be misinterpreted. It's fine to slip your pizza delivery guy a few extra bucks at the holidays but someone you're seeing? Cash is not king. Don't do it.

Instead, a small, playful, low-key, inexpensive gift could be a nice gesture. A favorite snack, a quirky tree ornament, or a gag gift - nothing TOO personal, though, like underwear or jewelry. Keep it light and match the energy of the relationship. Because your relationship is primarily physical, it's important to consider boundaries and intentions. You don't want to unintentionally signal that you're looking for something more serious, so avoid anything that screams commitment or gives the wrong idea.

Don't overthink it, either - in most hookup scenarios, both parties are well aware that this connection isn't about a deep emotional investment. If you're worried a gift might introduce a level of unnecessary complexity, then skip it.

If you do decide to give a gift, be clear about its casual nature - saying, "I thought this would make you laugh - don't worry, no strings attached!" can help make it clear this is just a casual thing. And don't expect anything in return. Be clear with yourself that you're giving this gift because you want to, not because you expect reciprocation.

If your hookup is someone who loves the holidays and thrives on festive cheer, a small gesture might be appreciated. However, if they’re the type to keep things strictly casual, even a small gift could feel like too much.

Our advice? The best way to navigate this situation is by respecting the boundaries of the relationship and making sure everyone involved is on the same page. If giving a gift is going to make it weird, then give it a miss.
